Black Box

He watched.
With eyes full of curiosity,
And hands itching to lift the lid.
Nervous as he was,

He stepped in closer.

While looking around to make sure,
His family and friends were out of sight.
He thought to himself,
Why were they crying?

He stepped in closer.

Telling himself that he will tell his grandfather,
About his new exciting discovery.
His one and only grandfather,
Who he loved most dearly.

He took another step.
Now only two steps away.
He will tell his grandfather what he did in school today.
His one and only grandfather,
Who he loved most dearly.

He took another step.
He will tell his grandfather how he was bullied in school,
How he fought back.
He takes his last step.

He will tell his grandfather,
That he has packed his bags.
And they can finally go far away together.
Just them two.
He leans over,
And lifts the lid.
He looks inside.

“I discovered that mom and dad were coming to see you.
They said you were going.
I was bullied today.
I fought back.
I packed my bags.
We can go away together now”

Saying this he steps into the black box.
Rests his head on the pillow.
By his one and only grandfather.
Who he loved most dearly.

He closed his eyes.
And took out the knife.
While it pierced into his heart he said,
“We can go to heaven together grandpa.”

  1. very poignant. ‘stepping closer’ has a rhythm within the poem. each time the boy step closer, we too skip a heartbeat. you have built it well.
